I think your research idea is great. I am interested to learn the demographics of your campus. My school had great success using Marzano's vocabulary strategies (we served 96% limited English Proficient). I would be interested to further learn what components of vocabulary instruction your teacher's found most imperative.
ReplyDeleteGreat research topic! I liked your research vocabulary strategies. I am most interested in the word wall...our campus us made it mandatory last year, but I sort of failed at keeping up with it. Is this something you currently use in the classroom? If so, is it effective?
ReplyDeleteI like your research paper also. Vocabulary is so critical to understanding any math work they may get. Want to hear more on your topic as you go through.
ReplyDeleteYour project is very good. I like the way you have your activities organized. Your results will be interesting to find out. One strategy that we have found to be successful in our school with teaching vocabulary, whether it be reading, math, science, or social studies, is to do a pre-teach to those students that are struggling. Even though you will be looking at all student, it might be something they could try with the struggling learners.
ReplyDeleteI really like your topic and your plan is well organized. I was wondering if the mid-year Math Academic Vocabulary Survey and the mid-year benchmark are the same thing. I'm pretty sure the Survey is the benchmark but that was the only thing that I wasn't exactly clear about. Great job and good luck on your project!
ReplyDeleteSince the STAAR Test are being released any time in coming week, you and the grade level teachers may want to review those test to draw from for you vocabulary words to focus on.
ReplyDeleteI also liked that you drew from Marzano's strategies.
Another strategy that we use is Word Maps -They help students think about new terms or concepts in several ways by asking the following questions:
"What is it?"
"What is it like?" and
"What are some examples?"
Thanks for the insights. I appreciate the strategy.
DeleteAwesome, Tammy! You have inspired me! I MUST go back and add to mine! I love that your plan is clear and concise. I love the idea of the pretest, benchmark, and post test. I'm just curious why you are doing 3rd-5th grade. Do you teach all those levels? Is your campus really small? Great work and thanks for an exemplary example!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Erika. I teach at Hunt ISD which is a Pre-K to 8th campus. There are less than 200 kids and only one teacher per grade at the elementary level. I chose 3rd-5th because we are a team and I knew it would be easy to get the data. We will be implementing the strategies throughout the elementary.
DeleteGreat action research plan!! I would agree with pre-teaching any words you possibly can. Another thing that has helped us is to make those words come "alive" and allowing students to have an experience with the word that gives them ownership. You could use demo kits to act out various words or incorporate science activities that allow for experiments that use mathematical words, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I really love your idea to give them experiences. I might use the same lingo, too. How can you make this word come "alive."
DeleteI think it's important to include cross-curricular words that are on the test but aren't specific to science. Kids need help with those as well.
ReplyDeleteGood idea, thanks!
DeleteI like your action research plan! It really goes into great detail of what you are doing step by step. I also like your evaluation strategies like you academic word wall in the cafeteria! So no matter where the students are, there is always an opportunity to learn!!
ReplyDeleteTammy your Action Research Plan is very well thought out and you seem to be so focused. I would agree with some of the others that created posts.....vocabulary is very significant. I love the your ideas about incorporated vocabulary and getting students more engaged in learning! Word Walls, in my opinion, are great to use for any subject!
ReplyDeleteLooks good. Are all of the teachers going to be implementing the changes of using the vocab and you will use the previous years results as your comparative data?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how many strategies there are, but are you going to make sure that all of them are covered before teachers start overlapping on single strategies, so that a particular strategy isn't overused.
Because we are a small school there are only three teachers. We will all be working the strategies, and I hope they will help develop those as well. Since every student will be involved, we will only compare the past two year's data with the data from this year. Thanks for your comments.
DeleteI love your topic and would really like to know what you find out after you are finished. I wish I would have looked at your plan before I completed mine. It is very detailed and specific. Vocab is definitely lacking...especially in math.
ReplyDeleteIt is a wonderful topic. As a high school teacher and College Guidance Counselor,I know how vocabulary is important on SAT test and on other tests as well.I will follow up your blog to get new information.Thank you so much sharing your research.
